What do You Need to Become a Licensed Private Investigator?

If the idea of legal analysis or criminal justice interests you, why not condider pursuing a career as a licensed private investigator. Some people who go this route already have experience in law enforcement, government agencies or security. Others may be specialists in computer data analysis or audio video surveillance. Even if you don't have this kind of experience, the right education and training can get you where you want to be. It also helps to have a grasp of the work duties performed by the average private investigator before deciding if this line of work is right for you or not.

There are numerous private investigator schools around the country. Some of them are located at two and four year educational institutions. If you are serious about earning a good salary and being respected in your profession, then a Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or a related field is recommended. There are two year specialty vocational programs at PI schools that can also get you started. Regardless of where you obtain your education, it is important to get any licenses you need according to local or state law. This information can easily be found online.

When it comes to private investigator licensing, different states have different regulations. You will need to check into your state's particular requirements before deciding on an educational route. For example some states may be more strict when it comes to licensing criteria. After you know whether certification is required and how to get it where you live, you will have an easier time choosing an educational facility. Many educational facilities that train people for work as private investigators get you out in the field with internship programs.

In order to become a licensed private investigator, an internship or work-study program is imperative. You can read textbook after textbook about the theories of being a private investigator, and while this may help somewhat, there is nothing that compares to work out in the field. Not only will you gain valuable experience, you will know whether or not you can hack it as a private investigator. Some people are more suited for the stakeouts, while others make perfect data analysts behind the computer. With so many different job facets investigative work can be very interesting.
