What Does a Private Investigator Do?

A PI is the common name for a private investigator, he or she performs a wide variety of different tasks as part of their career. Many people have misconceptions about investigative professionals thanks to the media and how they are portrayed. A private detective investigator does so much more than slink around following a mark and taking pictures on the sly. There are many different duties that come with the job that you may not be aware of.

When last checked by the United States Department of Labor through the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 30 percent of private detectives are self employed. The rest are employed through detective agencies and sent out on jobs their employer feels they are qualified for. While some detectives do perform stakeouts and capture evidence, others spend a lot of time delivering summons, subpoenas and other legal documents. Then there are investigators who work on audio surveillance and those who specialize in tracing work.

Another point to remember is that according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job competition can be fierce for private investigative jobs. Even with the field growing, competition remains fierce so the right education and training is essential. There are private detective schools as well as courses at trade schools and colleges. At these schools, you will learn everything you need to know about becoming an investigator and receive any certification required by your location.

Private investigating can be a hazardous career, depending on what kind of jobs you're doing. Some detectives do carry guns, if they have a specialized permit to do so. However, the majority do not. They opt instead for self defense mechanisms like pepper spray and even martial arts to defend themselves when necessary. These methods are also taught in school. Most who go into this field have some kind of related job background, whether it is being an ex-police officer or retired from the military.

If you are going to school to become a private investigator, check into the accreditation before signing on the dotted line. You may be able to get financial assistance if needed or at the least pay your tuition costs in installments. For those planning to hire a private detective investigator, check references and education before paying anyone to do an investigative job for you. Another good idea is to check with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) to ensure the agency or detective you are considering has no complaints registered.
